Notes:

This bibliography is not so much a structured study list as an eccentric record of our own readings in these fields. In the UK most of these books can be obtained from your local Library using the Inter-Library Loan Service. Go to the Enquiries desk with full details of the book you want and you will be asked to fill in a card and pay a small fee. The Library will then trace and obtain the book and advise you when it is available. Even rare books can be obtained in this way, sometimes borrowed from University Libraries, but there may be restrictions on the length of the loan.   If you want to buy a book, try the Japan Centre, 212 Piccadilly, London W1V 9LD Tel:0171-439 8035. They can send you a catalogue and post items to you. The Centre is near Piccadilly Circus and has a good range of books, craft items, and food. It also has an excellent Travel Centre who can tell you the cheapest ways to get to Japan when you decide you want more than armchair travels!  Another excellent bookshop is Books Nippon, 64-66 St Paul's Churchyard, London EC4M 8AA Tel:071-248 4956 Fax:071-489 1171.  For specialist books try Han Shan Tang Books Unit 3 Ashburton Centre, 276 Cortis Road, London SW15 3AY Tel:(+44 181) 788 1565  who produce excellent catalogues of rare and unusual Asian books.  You could also try Asian Rare Books in New York who have many older books on Japan both on, and more off, line and can apparently offer keen prices.  And the publisher Tuttle does a wide range of books on Japan, including some more unusual topics.

Details of each book are given in the form:

Author - Surname then first name(s)
Title
Sub-title (if any)
Publisher and Year
ISBN No. (where available)
Comments - which represent purely personal reactions rather than a proper review
